Adaptive spatiotemporal filtering by a neuromorphic model of the vertebrate retina

چکیده
We propose a theoretical framework of the adaptive control of visual sensitivity performed by the vertebrate retina. Instead of a logarithmic function, the photore-ceptor transfer function is modelled with a Michaelis-Menten law which has a more plausible biophysical correlate. We show that the neural and functional architecture of the retina supports the requirements for an optimal transcoding of non-stationary visual information: This control of visual sensitivity is done by using an adaptive transfer function whose parameters are spatiotemporally and locally estimated by the subsequent retinal circuit and fed back at the level of pho-toreceptors. Although the use of the resulting model remains limited in the context of digital image processing , it provides a good structural framework for an analog VLSI implementation of an adaptive spatiotem-poral neuromorphic retina.

A Qualitative Model-Framework for Spatio-temporal Effects in Vertebrate Retinas
Retinal models based on the Cellular Neural Network (CNN) paradigm [2] have been widely used [3-8]. These neuromorphic models are based on retinal anatomy and physiology [1, 10-11]. In this paper a framework is proposed for qualitative spatiotemporal studies in vertebrate retinas. The underlying retinal anatomy is followed as closely as possible, the characteristics of the physiological models,...

متن کاملA model of spatiotemporal signal processing by primate cones and horizontal cells
A model of spatiotemporal signal processing by the cone–horizontal cell circuit in the primate outer retina is developed and validated using measurements on the H1 horizontal cell from the literature. The model extends an earlier temporal model that mainly addressed the regulation of sensitivity by the cones. Three elements are added to the earlier model to describe the full spatiotemporal proc...
متن کاملA Biomimetic Model of the Outer Plexiform Layer by Incorporating Memristive Devices
In this paper we present a biorealistic model for the first part of the early vision of processing by incorporating memristive nanodevices. The architecture of the proposed network is based on the organization and functioning of the outer plexiform layer (OPL) in the vertebrate retina. We demonstrate that memristive devices are indeed a valuable building block for neuromorphic architectures, as...
